What is Body Schema

A body schema can be defined as the representation we have of our own body, its possibilities of movement and action, as well as its different limitations.

The representation of the body schema and of the relationships between the body and the environment are built through a long process of trial and error. It is a gradual process of maturation and learning that we have developed since childhood and is constantly updated.

Social contact is central to the construction of the body schema. Actually, we get to know the body of another being, our mother, before our own. Another social element that plays a major role in the construction of the body schema is the development of a language.

We can list different elements that influence the development of the body schema:

Perception: gives us information about our own body and the body of others, as well as vision of space, our activities, distances, directions, object weight, etc.

Movement: gives us information about our possibilities and limitations, what we are capable of doing with our own body.

Cognition: allows us to be aware of our body, distinguishing us from the rest; to combine and process information in a logical and structured way in order to give an answer.

Language: is useful to name the body parts and assign meaning to them.
